  4. This will just be more of the same dross - rinse and repeat. Why? Cause that’s what we’ve been watching for over a year now, and this guy clearly hasn’t got a clue what to do to change it. We might sneak a point, we might even somehow shithouse a win a la St Mirren & Killie - the fitba played will remain honking, indecipherable & unacceptable though. Happy new year everyone!!

  15. Lots of clubs will be watching him, not just on these shores. A person would have to be a real dumb, bitter person not to be commending the job he has done at Motherwell. He has won nothing, before some smart c*nt points it out, but the way he has consistently got players to respond and perform to his system has been very impressive up until now. Getting Paul McGinn to perform for them the way he has done this season, is impressive enough, but he has done this with the whole squad, exactly what a manager should be doing. We keep deluding ourselves we are going to buy our way to a good team. As much as the boy at Motherwell has been impressive, it is still a no from me, as I just have a feeling we would take what looks like a silk purse of a manager (at the moment), and turn it into a pigs ear.

  18. I absolutely would not want Askou. Because, if he even considered a move to Aberdeen, rather than back himself to chase down Hearts and the Old Firm when he's only eight, five and two points behind the three of them, then what the hell is wrong with him? Also, keep this going until the end of the season, and a bigger job than Aberdeen will be on the table for him.

  21. My granda walked there from my grandparents home in Baker street the first week the Nelson Street shop was open. He bought me a club pennant that showed the club honours including the then recent Drybrough Cup and the not so recent league cup win against the deid club, 1946, which has since been struck from the record. I was so excited as a kid that there could be something to do with the Dons that was not just on a Saturday afternoon. You could go into the shop any time you like and buy stuff. That had something to do with Aberdeen. Who would have thought… Of course such commercial taking the pi$$ out of all of us was so novel in them days…I don’t think there was even a new strip to buy every summer. Maybe every other two years. In any case all that folk wore was red and white barred knitted scarves. So the Nelson Street shop didn’t last long….

  22. We shouldn't be trusting Jimmy, or any other manager, with another transfer window. There's no chance Thelin signed Milanovic, he'll be a product of our scouting system, which is the way it should be. To date, he's been given very poor value for money from that system, which is hopefully something Pfannenstiel will help address. Milanovic is an interesting case in point. He's clearly a decent footballer who a scout would take a look at and would understandably decide was worth a look at. He clearly has some great attributes. The issue is the transition from that league to ours. It turns out that being very strong down under doesn't transfer to the SPFL, it's that shade below, and without game time he won't develop (I think he'd benefit from six months at someone like Livi). We had a similar situation with McGarry, and we should have used the data from his signing as a guage to measure Milanovic. That's how it's supposed to work, but maybe it just needs more data! Similarly, any signings JT is making off his own back from Scandinavia need to go through that system so that we have something to compare league to league for future signings. Thelin will have run his known targets dry in that part of the world I expect, and might be more likely to look to players he's seen in the SPFL. At present, we're not getting a better return from our expensive European based signings than McInnes was picking up players from down south. We're definitely not getting a better return than those he picked up from the SPFL, although his good ones were either really obvious or his mate's son (when actually having to dig around we got shite like Morris, Quinn, Tansey, Storey and so on). As we all pointed out, the balance of signings was ridiculous, with a million project players and some old guys. That stems from the fucking awful decision not to have the sporting director position filled at the time JT was hired (or as soon as McInnes left as we all suggested). He needed someone experienced in the building reviewing age profiles, balance of positions etc and perhaps vetoing certain targets. I can imagine it's very difficult to maintain a view of the macro strategy when you're stuck in the weeds of the micro level looking at videos of players and so on - we see it a lot, with even the Tims forgetting that they might need a striker at some point. Pfannenstiel can hopefully provide the high level view to ensure we stay on strategy and in balance, he shouldn't be there to provide his favourite contacts or any of the other stuff I've heard suggested. Thelin suffered a little because he didn't come into the job with a good set of targets with SPFL experience (McInnes immediately had Robson and Flood, Brown had McGinn, Hayes etc, Goodwin had fucking Anthony fucking Stewart for some bizarre reason), and his Scandi lads just haven't made the transition with any great degree of success. That's where a sporting director would hopefully have directed a portion of signings to this country to help bed him in. Whilst I'd say that we are only a midfielder and perhaps a winger away from having something that might work for the next six months, I have little faith in our structure, with Pfannenstiel just in the door, to be able to make those two important signings.

  23. My theory is that Cormack wants the whole back room structure sorted; coaching, academy. Basically a whole DNA - pathway to first team, pathway for coaches to step up too. This whole "three year project" is more about Thelin leaving a legacy on the club, an imprint. That's why he has backed Thelin a hell of a lot more than Glass, Goodwin or Robson because they weren't offering that. And I think results wise, Thelin winning the cup and banking £6m+ from Europe, that was probably ahead of schedule - the club likely were aiming for that in his second or third season. It would also explain why Thelin doesn't feel the need to throw in Bilalovic and Kjartansson. I think he's quite happy to develop these guys and have the next manager enjoy the fruits of his labour. Like I said, just a theory. If he gets sacked next week, someone delete this.

  24. The only constant with our midfield players, is their inconsistency. Find it very hard to believe, from the outside looking in, that Polvara is going, but Palaversa is staying. I'd say Palaversa is even more inconsistent than Polvara. I'm not overly fussed with what Clarkson allegedly said to JT, you have to apply a bit of context around it. The lad was pissed off and told JT his feelings. I don't have an issue with that. Maybe Jimmy is a sensitive soul. If I was being benched, whilst seeing some of the shit performances, from all our midfielders this season, I'd probably have said far worse than that to him. I still say Clarkson is the best midfielder at the club and a shame it appears to be ending like this.

    VAR

Except it's VAR that sucks the life out of the game, never knowing when to celebrate a goal, and so on. Before it was just shite refereeing, now it's shite refereeing and a ruined experience. We have all those Tifos and fireworks and stuff to 'enhance the fan experience ' when the best thing to achieve that would be to bin VAR. Cormack should just drop the 60 second stuff and argue for an end to VAR. I reckon he'd get lots of support.

  27. He's not as good as Clarkson. He's not as good as Ramadani was. We could probably pick up similar or better for half that. His work rate can't be faulted, which is helping him a lot. He was gash in the last home game, but still put in a decent shift. He has a ceiling, because he's not particularly physical and he isn't a brilliant reader of the game. I could see him taking the Ramadani route, but we're very unlikely to be getting an uplift on the £1.5M. I'd say it would be a very high risk signing.

  28. Clarkson is arguably our most talented plaar; that JT hisna got a tune oot o him is a pretty major failure on his part. That lame performance against Motherwell is the same issue extrapolated: our midfield set-up is a disaster. Naebody up the pitch. Surely the idea of having 3 centre-backs is to give your midfield better chances to get up the pitch?

  29. I disagree. It's the equivalent of saying Billy Gilmour isn't good enough. You adjust the team to get the best out of players like Clarkson, because if you do then they'll create numerous chances. They're the difference between being a sideways, laboured, slow build up team, that hopes for a mistake from the opposition, and a team that makes the incisive pass and brings the attacking players into play when they have their best chance of scoring before the opponent gets back. The fact that we didn't sign anyone to compliment Clarkson, even as an option during games, is criminal. Even Robson knew how to get the best out of him. Clarkson taking the ball from defence and immediately getting the strikers involved, with Ramadani and Shinnie pressing high was a great setup. That, with the option switch and play two defensive midfielders and a number 10 like Armstrong would be a great way to build a squad (midfield). We really only needed one additional signing to do that. There isn't a chance on earth that Marshall is close to the level of Clarkson (that's not a criticism), and the Icelandic laddy looks to me to be a replacement for Nilsen in the squad, but I doubt he'll be getting much time this season. If Polvara is open to being a utility player, then he's worth his weight in gold. Palaversa can leave with many thanks for his only good game.

  30. Happy New Year to everyone. Just to make us all feel our age a little more, an article on the P&J site, about this being the 40th year since Fergie left the Dons for Manure. 40 years...Yikes.
