Obviously I couldn't give a fuck about the English pish, but agree with this. You can see how well McInnes is doing with the recruitment largely taken away from him. The problem is that if every other club has a team of analysts doing the recruitment then they're likely to see a better return over time - probably. You're also not going to get a good manager who'll want to spend days trawling data too. There's a ceiling to it, and we reached that with McInnes, who was spread far too thin with us. The sporting director is just the guy that pins together the recruitment, the sports science, youth team and the manager. He makes sure that the high level goals are being met and everything is staying in balance. Clearly what happened in the summer should never happen under a competent sporting director. He'd have questioned the recruitment of too many similar players, the lack of athletic midfielder, as well as insisting on space for youth. He holds all departments to account.4 points

"there is some big names, some surprising names, there is some terrible names" Once we get new manager appointed someone needs to take Lutz out to the pub , get him pissed and get somes names under the 3 categories noted below. big ,surprising and terrible3 points

But harsh that, he found a few Dons players. And his corners are much better than Karlsson’s!2 points

Given how leven lined up last time he was in charge I would say it's most likely a 4231/451. My guess is Polavara and Bilalovic in the wide spots with armstrong playing no 10 though if that is the 3 I would also expect them to be fairly fluid in where they line up. Shinne and KK at dm should make us pretty solid so we might not get a doing after all.2 points

I get the theory but it's a mighty restrictive policy and also makes life easier for your rivals. Does that mean you play the same system and same way in a European tie against Barcelona where you will have little of the ball as you would in a league cup tie versus Dumbarton just because that's your philosophy? Can we not have a six foot six striker that we go long to when we play against a small side or have a couple of nippy wingers that we can chuck on and play a different way when we play a side with a couple of slow full backs? There is no need to be so rigid in the thinking, football changes season to season. The club philosophy thing is modern day buzz word shite that chairman seem to churn out in the same way that they fire managers who win but don't have a nice playing style and a year later they find their club fighting relegation. You are spot it, it absolutely is and there are numerous examples of it not working. It is normally a manager ending up with a player he does not want who has been forced on him. At the level we are at it really should not be that difficult. We should only need 3 or 4 new players in a transfer window, a manager with a decent eye for a player could easily deal with that. I am not suggesting the manager is involved in negotiating transfer fees or wages but he could easily be the one picking the players he wants in his squad if they are guys that are known to him.2 points

Not so sure. Those two will have been on at least seven figure sums at the BBC, given the quality of their output, and won't be a cheap, desperate, hire by any means.2 points

Once more we gid rid of the boss, on the back of an embarrassing loss Can the next in the job, make a fist of this mob? Or subject us to more dismal dross?2 points

Apologies for posting the video in the other chain, just saw this. He’s really interesting, and I do like his take on Scottish identity. Hope that promising David Watson! does suggest jimmy was too nice and we weren’t even trying hard enough. My question was fitness as we don’t really press and that was one of the core attributes of our identity. wonder if there’s a place for shinnie in the new coaching staff?2 points

Lorry tipped its load in Mastrick and parked up in car park where rent Office is now. It was like a non alcoholic version of whisky galore as bottles disppeared . Pineapple ,strawberry ,american ice cream soda etc. Actually sickened ourselves of it and ended up putting hole in caps , shaking it and spraying each other like we had won the grand prix. My favourite drink though was actually scotch cola ( which I think might have been hays ) Hays lemonade and advocaat & scotchmac & sweetheart stout were actually acceptable drinks at new year parties for under 12s back in the day plus the scoofs from cans of mcewans export when pouring them into those dimpled beer mugs with handles ( krugs?) for your uncles. Hardly drink alcohol now and "ale" of choice currently is pepsi max..would love to try scotch cola again1 point

An improvement. If we could learn to defend set pieces and show composure in front of goal, we’d be a hell of a lot better! Thought Polvara did well after recent poor performances, albeit he missed a sitter.1 point

I think we're doing man-for-man but being slower to react than them every time. That second one was dropped right into an area where someone should have been, but the hun forward raced onto it first.1 point

I do, Mikey has turned into a right good player. Does all the hard work. Great ball winner and has a bit of quality.1 point

I got the licence out a lucky bag in 1993. Think of the formation as a 4-1-4-1 as that’s what it’ll be when we don’t have the ball.1 point

You can't just invent new formations, that requires a licence. A 4-1-2-3 has never existed.1 point

He could either be away, or maybe just being cautious at Ibrox with a player who probably isn't match sharp1 point

The BBC has put up highlights of a 3-3 draw between us and the Huns from 1997. Thon Brian O'Neil was pish, wasn't he?1 point

Don’t agree. ‘Old’ football the manager did everything. Now the manager is the coach, being asked to spend all of his time doing what he does best, coach. There is not one model for every club, and the manager role can vary slightly. Other folks do the scouting and signing of players. You also sign a manager who aligns with your/the clubs philosophy, which is correct in my option. You referenced Amorim, a very bizarre hire because he didn’t align. A manager/coach should know his role and is not bigger than the club. its how it is with most sports in the states, the manager is ‘only’ the coach with the old manager job split between other ‘experts.’1 point

Loots talks a great game but the whole director of football new age crap worries me and the bloke might as well just manage the team himself. You only have to look down the road at Amorim's last press conference to see what will probably happen. The new manager ain't got any say as to how the team is going to play, ain't got no say on which players are in his squad but if he loses then he gets fired. Great gig. It's like cutting off Luke Littler's right hand and asking him to just crack on.1 point

I don’t really think so, we have a number of players like that. I think he’s just meaning that for every strachan and weir we need a cooper and Simpson. he was clear that players will be going soon, wonder who?? Our loaners are aouchiche and karlsson, both who, like it or not, do contribute. Hope they stay and are more productive under leven/new manager.1 point

Yeah it used to be a Dons-friendly pub. I was there for a Gothenburg anniversary night - Peter Weir and John McMaster were the special guests, they did a Q&A and the pub played the full game on the TV - and it was packed that night with Dons fans. I always remember Kevin Bridges standing at the bar ordering a pint, looking round bemused as to why so many Aberdeen fans were in. But, last few times I've been there to watch a Dons game, you can count on one hand how many fellow fans are there. Think the pub sponsored the Aberdeen Glasgow supporters team or something back in the day, which was why they encouraged other fans to go. Might be a supporters bus or two that stops there pre-match though so might be worth going past, but can't guarantee it. Especially for a midweek match. When I first moved to Glasgow, every Dons fan seemed to go to Hubbards, a decent bar in its day. I remember the night we got past Dnipro, some bounce at the final whistle that then spilled onto the streets, was like being back in union street. But now sadly it's changed owners, is called the French Horn, and only shows NFL and the Six Nations. A fucking liberty. But yeah, not sure where everyone goes now. I'm not even bothering to go to the game - £37 when it's -6 outside, and us playing like we have been, think I'll stick the heating on and watch from home. I did briefly consider changing my mind thinking Leven might get a new manager bounce, but prob left it too late now.1 point

Last time I was at mordor was the 2-1 game where we finally ended that awful record there. I still feel very smug about getting to attend that game incidentally which is why I mention it . Anyway a whole bunch off Aberdeen fans met up in the hyndland rock bar in the west end to get smashed then got the tube across. I think it was something of a dons pub at that point as I'm pretty sure Bobby Biscuit formerly of this parish went there a lot and got pally with the owners. No idea if that is still a thing or not though.1 point

Going to jump to the defense of Dave Cormack here. Few out there blaming him for yet another bad hire/quick sacking. The club were not in a great financial shape when he joined the club, no training facility, a failing stadium, and other than Mcinnes (which coincided with significant financial issues in Scottish football and all of our league opponents except Celtic being relegated, and obviously rangers dying), we’ve arguably had 2 somewhat successful managers in smith/scott and calderwood since fergie. The rest have been poor. since Willie was manager (could argue he was successful I suppose) we’ve had (not including interim) - Aitken - 2 years 9 months Alex miller - 13 months Heggarty - 5 months (may have been intern) ebbe - 3 years 4 months (nearly relegated) Paterson - 1 yr 5 months Calderwood - 4 yrs 11 months mcghee - 1 yr 5 months brown - 2 yrs 4 months mcinnes - 7 yrs 11 months Glass - 11 months goodwin - 11 months robson - 1 yr Thelin - 1 yr 7 months Since cormack took over the game day experience seems to be excellent (based on what I see on red tv), the team are more connected with the fans (maybe a Thelin thing), and in current modern football he’s given managers time then pulled the plug when it’s not worked out. He’s made significant investment with the training ground, and we now have a director of football. He’s invested in the playing staff. Look at the sackings of Martin and now Nancy, cormack hasn’t been that heartless. I don’t particularly understand the hiring of glass, and while Goodwin, Robson, and even warnock weren’t my preferred choice,s, I understood the logic. He’s also been strategic in the firings, giving time to qualify for Europe and assess squads. Many wanted Robson as manager, an inside man and fans favorite, an he was willing to hire internally and give him a chance. curious to know what potential owners out there would come to Aberdeen and give more and do a better job. Rangers and Celtic appear a mess behind the scenes, I dont think we have it too badly and should maybe appreciate what we do have. Not an easy job finding quality owners and successful managers.1 point

Is it snowing in weegieland like? If nae, I'd rather they just got it out the way. Will be really interesting to see how Leven lines up for it. As someone who was here the entire time, it'll be intriguing to get a glimpse into how much he really believed in Thelin's project.1 point
