I’m not sure were operating in a market where we’re better than that

The truth is, we are closer to St Mirren as a club, than we are any of the big boys.

I've said it before, I don't think we are big enough to be trying to emulate the big boys of football.

I'd rather we concentrate on being a competitive team and a place where youth gets a chance.

We’re in this depressing Goldilocks Zone where we expect to be better than the rest but we’ll never afford players to do it.
As you say, being well organised, difficult to beat with some youth players coming through and everyone would be happy(ish)

Do that and our slightly larger budget should see us above the shite more often than not

To be fair to McGlynn I think he is being unfairly stereotyped based on his age (and probably appearance). As can be seen from his LinkedIn page, he's fluent in Cormackese which suggests he'd be handy firing out tactical analysis slide decks on a laptop: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-mcglynn-3a53586b/?originalSubdomain=uk

• Talent focused – Identify early, mentor, develop, perform and maximize value
• Organised and structured with a results focused attitude

Yep, he was a scout for the Tims, he knows how the system works and any time you hear him speak, he's well versed. Robinson I'd be far less sure about.

We had that under McInnes and a large number of fans weren't happy. We also largely failed with that model since the mid nineties through to the point the Hun went bust. It had a ceiling, and McInnes was it.

Maybe that is our actual ceiling. I tend to agree that our budget will never be enough to buy success, or consistency, it doesn't buy enough additional players to cover injury even if all signings were perfect. However, I'm loathe to criticise Cormack for recognising that ceiling and trying to implement a strategy to break through it. That he seems incapable of implementing, or letting others implement, the strategy is the problem.

Robinson has worked on building a team that is hard to beat, works hard and physically competitive - where is the players for him to work with in our squad?

Shinnie and Devlin but that’s about it and they are getting to the end of their careers

Apart from the cup win, even his stock in trade hasn’t worked and their form is as bad as ours.
like replacing Jimmy with another Jimmy (cup win masking over the cracks)

maybe it has just gone stale at Paisley after punching above their weight for last couple of years and the cup win made players believe they were better than they are

i agree that we are no better or worse position that St Mirren despite wasting some money on players not good enough, but for all the vision of wanting to play attractive football, only Motherwell have really managed to do that competitively and will still likely win nothing.

Cathro, Maloney and Glass were appointed to play open attractive football but didn’t work in this league as the majority of the other teams just physically outmuscled them

I just hope we get the right balance of steel and silky football correct this time

That’s glossing over a number of Dereks failings there.

So? Those failings are the same for any single manager given the keys to the building. Not bringing through youth, limiting your signings to the lower English leagues, pragmatic football, grinding out results, signing players who have had a couple of good games against you. These are all symptoms of a structure where the manager is unaccountable until they're sacked, at which point you realise that they're accountable for absolutely everything and you need to start again.

I understand the game is changing but even still…

Aye, but the change isn't really for the better.

We are quite possibly just legacy fans with no place in the modern game.

I mean, I don't even do AberDNA and yet here I am, on here complaining about our latest signing.

The cheek of it.

They are taking far too long to pick a new manager, the penguin guy needs to get his finger out.

I'm going to defend Lutz here.

Bigger clubs than us have had vacancies at the same time, and have been happy to just appoint interims until the end of the season. Man Utd (Carrick), Celtic (O'Neill - for the second time this season) are two such examples.

Had we just said "Leven until the end of the season", would we have been happy?

It's coming up to three weeks, which isn't that long. As long as he appoints him within the next week, and the boy wins at least two trophies - at least one of which needs to be a European trophy - then I'd say the wait was worth it.

It takes as long as it takes, Leven is clearly a safe pair of hands so I don't see the rush 2bh

We’ve been over the ground on this on the dead site, but for those of us who live too far away from Scotland to get to matches, it’s just a way of supporting the club.

That's precisely why I signed up.

That and the free shirt every year. And getting my name on the wall in the tunnel. I like to think it motivates the players to play well.

This is a quiet thread!!!!!!

leven until summer? Given the length of time, I’m thinking who we want, or good options, just are not available right now. Or who we want (not just one particular person) may be available in the summer. Don’t see us settling, but waiting is the better option.

It may yet end up being Leven until the summer.  It's not ideal but it's not as bad as appointing someone like the fucking tourist to interim. It would also give him good experience given he's clearly being groomed for the big job somewhere down the line.
