Apparently though the offer has been made to his agent and Clangers has lost his phone so doesn't know if his agent has tried to call him or not... seriously.

Full-back’s wages may be too much, says Craig Brown

ABERDEEN FC manager Craig Brown today admitted he is unlikely to secure Norwich’s Steven Smith on loan due to the full-back’s inflated wages.

 

Smith enjoyed a successful loan period at Pittodrie last season.

 

However, the Canaries’ promotion to the Premier League has seen Smith’s wages rocket. And Brown reckons Smith will not walk away from a lucrative deal at Carrow Road.

Always suspected this might be the case as soon as Norwich got promoted. Amazing how your wages being doubled cures home sickness.

Defender Steven Smith may start next season with Norwich City rather than join Aberdeen – thanks to a pay rise sparked by the Canaries’ promotion to the Premier League.

 

Smith spent the second half of last season on loan to the Dons and manager Craig Brown is keen to take him back to Pittodrie.

 

But former Scotland boss Brown fears his hopes of signing the 25-year-old left-back have been dashed by City’s new top-flight status.

 

“Smith has received a big rise in wages following Norwich’s promotion from the Championship and he is obviously not going to leave without an inducement from Norwich,” said Brown.

 

“His club is determined not to do that which means they will freeze the guy out for a year and hope to sicken him into leaving to play football again – but they won’t succeed given the money Smith is now earning.”

 

Brown told the Press and Journal: “The training ground at the club has effectively become a health farm. He will turn up each morning, do some training, have a nice shower, eat his lunch there and go home with his nice wage packet every week.”

 

The Bellshill-born Smith signed a two-year deal with the Canaries when he moved from Glasgow Rangers on a free transfer last June, the third of manager Paul Lambert’s seven summer recruits.

 

He suffered an Achilles injury during the pre-season trip to Germany and did not appear in the first team until he came on as a substitute in the 4-3 Championship victory at home to Leicester on September 28. He made his first start four days later in the 3-0 win at Bristol City after Adam Drury suffered an injury in the pre-match warm-up.

 

But Smith sustained a hip injury in the 2-2 draw at home to Burnley on November 6, the last of his seven first team appearances.

 

In January, he joined Aberdeen on loan with Lambert saying the full-back had found it hard to settle in Norfolk.

 

Smith made 20 first team appearances for the Scottish Premier League club, who reached the Scottish Cup semi-finals, and Brown admitted he would like to retain his services.

 

Earlier this week, Lambert said talks with Aberdeen over a possible move for Smith were “ongoing”.

 

He said: “Steven’s agent and David (McNally) are talking on that. I’ve had a brief chat with Craig Brown.

 

“If something can be done there I’m pretty sure Steven would look at it.

 

“Ideally he’d like to go permanently but it all depends on what Aberdeen want to do.”

I don't think this is dead.  If Norwich had any sense they'd meet Smith half way, give him a decent pay off and let him sign for the Dons.

I agree, sounds like a deal has been all but agreed, all it needs is a settlement from Norwich and he'll be up the road. I can't see them being happy to let a player just sit in the squad taking a healthy wage. Surely they'll meet him 1/2 way? Just have to wait and see I guess

According to his Wiki page, hearts have shown an interest in him and may possibly sign him. Would seem a bit pointless to me if they've already signed Danny Grainger.

Maybe we should show interest in Derek Young. That way, Hearts might sign him with urgency too.

Craig Brown says Norwich City's promotion to England's top-flight will make it more difficult for left-back Steven Smith to return to Aberdeen.

 

Brown, who confirmed a trial for former West Ham striker Daniel Uchechi, had hoped Smith would be back at Pittodrie after his successful loan spell.

 

"I think it'll be quite difficult to get anyone whose - the rumour is that - wages double," said the Dons manager.

 

"So quite clearly it will be harder to move him now than it was a year ago."

 

The Dons had hoped that Norwich's promotion from the Championship would make Smith less likely to be in manager Paul Lambert's plans.

 

But Brown told his club website: "I think the money might make it quite difficult for us."

 

The Dons boss is seeking another striker with Scotland international Chris Maguire widely expected to join Derby County should the two clubs agree a compensation package.

 

Brown said "we are happy with the four strikers that we have" but that "we could do with another striker" because it might not be enough depth for the whole season.

 

"But if someone offers us Lionel Messi or some very good striker in addition to that then we will have a look and see if he is any use to us," the manager told his club website.

 

The 21-year-old Uchechi will be given the chance to impress in pre-season training.

He began his career with Charlton Athletic before joining West Ham in 2009 but moved to his homeland with Dender before returning to the UK on loan to Leicester City last term.

 

"We had a request from an agent about Danny and he told me what a wonderful player he was," Brown said of the Nigeria Under-20 international who has yet to become a first-team regular with a British club.

 

"We will have a look at him and he seems to be a reasonably good player."

 

Aberdeen's only signing so far this summer is 31-year-old former Preston and Derby defender Youl Mawene, who was a free agent after leaving Greek club Panserraikos, and Brown had heard that it had not excited some Dons fans.

 

"It's more important that they are excited after they see him play a few games, that would please me even more, but I'm very confident about the ability of Mawene," said the manager.

 

"But we're not going to sign players for the sake of it.

 

"I've watched other clubs make a lot of signings and I'm not envious of any of them.

 

"I wouldn't like the supporters to think we are not on the case as we are all working diligently on improving the team."

Agreed but i will confess to some anxiety in that the par for the course of a transfer window is that the majority of the business seems to happen in the last few days.  This down to players coming to terms with the fact that actually barca will not be making a shock last minute swoop for them and being a bit more realistic in terms of wages etc.  How it is is how it is but come the end of august the spl will have played 5-6 fixtures, we need to have the core of our squad in place before the season starts and thats only a month away
