Ripping DVD to iPad on a PC

Pretty simple to do, you need to download some dvd ripping software and some dvd format conversion software.  Once converted to something like mp4 or avi transfer it across

What format (compatible with Apple products) has the smallest file sizes? I've only got a poverty spec 16GB iPad.
